Internet coupon giant Groupon recently announced that they would no longer accept gun-related promotions. Groupon offered no comment when they were asked if this suspension was temporary or permanent.
A representative of Groupon said the company has been evaluating firearm-related promotions, including shooting ranges and concealed weapons courses, for the last eight months and that feedback from both customers and merchants led them to conclude that it’s not a fit for them at the present.
This most definitely has not been the experience here at BluCore. Our offer of a discount for an hour of range time with ammunition included was met with a great deal of enthusiasm by customers in the Denver area.
It’s no secret that personal firearms are coming under intense scrutiny lately and that politicians are under considerable pressure from anti-gun advocates to restrict their possession and use. It appears that this pressure is now spreading to the business community where certain companies are backing away from even associating with aspects of sport shooting, such as shooting ranges and safety classes. Even though these classes are popular and perfectly responsible they are viewed as “politically incorrect.”
Groupon’s policy change came to light when an Austin, Texas gun shop owner complained on AOL’s Daily Finance site about it. He said that a promotion he was running for concealed carry classes was so successful that he doubled the number of coupons being offered – at the suggestion of a Groupon sales representative, no less. Two days later, in the middle of the promotion and with no warning, the Groupon rep called back to say that the deal was cancelled.
When interviewed by CNNMoney, the shop owner said he was speaking with legal counsel about options regarding violations of the contract he had with Groupon. He’s also encouraging shooting enthusiasts to complain and boycott Groupon over the policy change.
