Why a Firearm for Home Defense?

There are a great many reasons why people choose to own firearms, and one of the most common is home defense. Many gun-control advocates argue that ordinary citizens don’t need to worry about defending themselves or their loved ones, because that is what the police are for. But they often conveniently ignore the 2005 US Supreme Court decision in Castle Rock v. Gonzales that holds that police do not have a legal obligation to protect an individual citizen, only to protect society as whole. This means that the duty to protect one’s self and loved ones lies with the individual.

There are many instances of regular citizens defending their homes and loved ones, and almost none are reported by the mainstream media. Most of the mainstream media outlets reported the story of Sarah McKinley, the Oklahoma mother who shot and killed an intruder while defending herself and her 3 month old baby. Most of the reporters acted like this was such an uncommon occurrence, but in reality it happens every day, all across the United States. NRA members are probably familiar with the regular section in the NRA’s monthly print and online magazines, the Armed Citizen, which reports on several instances of private citizens defending their lives and property with firearms. Recently, there was a story out of Evansville, IN where two armed men (it later turned out they only had pellet guns) broke into a house and began beating one of the residents. The other resident, Matt Fugate, retrieved his pistol from his Gunvault and held the assailants at gunpoint until the police arrived. In another story, this time out of Utah, Eric Martin awoke to someone in his home. He grabbed his gun and confronted the intruder, holding him at gunpoint until the police arrived.

According to Martin, he asked the suspect, ‘Do you know what I have pointed at you?’ He said, ‘No,’ and I said, ‘Do you want to know?’ and he of course doesn’t respond to that one, so I tell him, ‘Let me explain, I’ve got a 9mm pointed at you with high-velocity hollow points in the chamber,’ and I explained to him what that will do to him if he moves. He tried to get up once, and I explained again that this was the last time I was going to have this conversation with him, and he stayed on the ground at that point.

These are excellent stories of private citizens using their firearms to stop a criminal and detain them until police arrive. Neither of these stories tells how long the men had to wait for the police, but a CBS4 Denver story from December of 2012 shows the average response time for Denver PD is over 15 minutes. There is an old adage that says “when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.” This is absolutely true for the residents of the City and County of Denver. For those 15 minutes that it takes for the police to arrive, the only thing that may stand between your loved ones and a potentially violent criminal is you: an ordinary citizen with a firearm.

If you own a pistol for self-defense, you might want to take our Home Defense Pistol I class at the Black Site.  This class teaches the fundamentals for adequately moving through and clearing a typical residential home.  It involves shooting AirSoft guns with plastic pellets and proper safety gear in controlled, mock-up-home scenarios.  No live fire shooting is conducted. All equipment is provided to students during the class. Students may participate as role players if they choose and should expect to be engaged by AirSoft guns.  This is a practical class that will give you an advantage over your adversary if you were to find an intruder breaking into your house.

Basic Home Defense is a class that lays the ground work for developing and implementing a good home defense plan, and is encouraged before taking our Home Defense Pistol classes, but not required. Topics covered in the class include alarm systems, home defense firearms and ammunition, safe rooms, barricading, basic self defense moves, and door/window security features.

We offer a variety of defensive and preparedness classes at our new Black Site facility.  You can see a complete list of the classes offered here.
